Carrying Out Iodine Skin Test

By Olive Pate

Iodine is an important building block that thyroid makes use of to produce the necessary hormones of metabolism. The processes of metabolism cannot take place without enough iodin in the body and the individual will suffer from hypothyroidism. The iodine skin test is one way of testing for deficiencies of iodine.

It theoretically measures how fast the iodin is absorbed into the body via the skin. It is not perfectly reliable because it does not give the levels of iodine concentration in the body as would a test carried out by the doctor. It just gives the speed of absorption. It cannot therefore used as a substitute to the usual laboratory tests.

To perform this test, make a tincture or use a solution of iodin. Make a paint of three inch by three inch on the abdomen, inner forearm or inner thigh. Before getting into contact with anything let it dry. This is to avoid staining. Take twenty four hours to monitor for any changes in color of the patch.

Those who support the use of this examination believe that most important is the time taken before the patch disappears. If it will be present after twenty four hours, the results you get are normal. If it will disappear before twenty four hours end the results are abnormal. Results coming out in less than eighteen hours show moderate to intense iodin deficiency. That person needs to get iodin supplements.

There are elements which associate to cause the fading of the iodine color from the skin surface. The solution is reduced to a compound known as iodide by the surface of skin. This resulting compound is white this is why there is fading. The rate at which the iodin evaporates is affected by atmospheric pressure and the temperatures. For more accurate results, loading test is the better alternative.

If the levels of iodin in your body are level, this may indicate malfunctioning of the thyroid. It needs iodin in balancing of hormones in the body, heartbeat regulation, cholesterol stabilization, weight control, enhancement of muscle growth, provision of energy, regulation of the menstrual cycle and even keeping a positive state of mind.

Thyroid gland stores two thirds the total iodin found in the body. Taking seaweed vegetable is among the best ways of boosting the levels of iodine. A spoonful of the seaweed daily is enough to take the levels back to normal. Fish and any seafood incorporation in diet can go a long way in helping. Dairy products or even eggs can be another alternative. There is a group of foods known as Goitrogens which hinder how iodin is utilized in the body. The food types in this category include turnips, kales, kohlrabi, cabbage, broccoli, peanuts, cauliflower, soy flour and Brussels sprouts.

Copper, zinc, iodine, selenium and tyrosine are the minerals needed to reactivate thyroid gland. Make sure to include foods rich in these nutrients in your nutrition. For those suffering from Hashimotos Thyroiditis, iodine supplementation should be avoided unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
