All You Need To Know About CMS Pulse Oximeters

By Leticia Jensen

Pulse oximetry is all about monitoring blood oxygenation. The oxygen level in the blood is required to be above 95 percent. Cms pulse oximeters are non-invasive medical equipment which are used by doctors to check the level of oxygen. They have to ensure that it does not fall below the safe standard levels. These devices are very useful in the case whereby oxygen saturation of the patient has to be monitored. They are used in operations, intensive care, treatment and in recovery hospital wards.

These devices are very effective and normally are able to detect even the most slightest unsafe change in blood oxygenation. Though these medical devices have historical precedence, they became wide spread in the 1890s. This is how these devices work. An oxygen monitor has a small probe which is clipped to the spot of the patient body where there is particularly good flow of blood. Normally an oxygen monitor is clipped to a finger or an earlobe.

This monitor is then attached to a separate computerized unit whose work is majorly to display the readings. Inside the probe there is a light emitter that sends out two streams of light. One is red and the other infrared. These steams of light emitted are received and measured by a photo detector, which is located opposite the emitter.

Hemoglobin which is already oxygenated is able to take in infrared light in high amount and in addition it facilitates the passing through of the red light. The blood which does not have oxygen takes in the red light in high amounts while on the other hand allowing infrared to go through it. Oxygen content in the blood is calculated through the outcome given by both lights.

If an oxygen monitor detects any change in the level of oxygen of a patient under anesthesia, then it sounds an alarm. This is important because, a heart failure and drain damage can occur if the human body is starved of oxygen in as little time as three minutes. This is why early detection is quite important.

As illustrated earlier the body has a certain level of oxygen requirement to facilitate proper and efficient function ability of the organs. The device assists immensely in detection of shortages of oxygen in the blood. In the past when the devices were not yet innovated the health professionals were not able to detect the low oxygen levels until it was too late when the condition had become critical.

They oximeters are of various types which entail pediatric, finger and handheld oxygen monitors. Pediatric device is mainly used on children and usually gives accurate feedback. When using the finger device they have equipment that directs the practitioner on the best finger to utilize in taking the oxygen measurements. In the early days after the machine innovation it was very huge and costly for people to afford, this has changed since they are affordable and portable varieties in the market.

There are many versions of cms oxygen monitors available today but the most effective ones are the finger models. They are also very affordable. They are sold as from 30 dollars, including delivery. These devices are used for treating pneumonia as well as neonatal blindness by anesthesiologists .
