Considering The Work A Waco OB GYN Does

By Eliza Mendoza

When thinking about visiting a Waco OB GYN women need to understand the services that will be available to them. Many times women think that an OB GYN only offers services to women who are pregnant. This is simply not the case as this type of doctor treats many different types of women's health issues.

OB is short for obstetrician. This is the side of the specialty that deals with the pregnancy, delivery and post-pregnancy period of a woman's life. While long ago, delivering babies was primarily a job for women, today there are many men obstetricians. A woman will visit her doctor many times during her pregnancy.

Gynecologist is the GYN part of the title. This type of doctor works primarily with the patient to care for her reproductive health. It is recommended that a woman visit her gynecologist on a yearly basis to have a pap smear completed. Pap smears look at the cells that are present in the reproductive system and this gives them an indication of her female health.

Hopefully, the woman will have a prior relationship with an OB GYN before she finds out that she is pregnant so that she does not have the stress of looking for a new doctor. However, if she does not already have one chosen, she is sure to have a friend who can offer a referral. If she is going to want to have her baby at home, she will need to find a doctor that will concur.

Connecting with your doctor is important and this is also true with obstetricians. Today, many OB doctors work in practices with several other doctors in their specialty. While this allows the patient to always have a doctor available to them, the patient may discover that their doctor is not available for her delivery. For example, if there are five doctors in a practice, the woman has a 1 in 5 chance that her chosen obstetrician will be with her during delivery.

A gynecological visit is usually not on the top of the list of things to do for a woman. The exam can be embarrassing because it is very intimate. However, women must remember that their doctor, whether male or female, is only looking at their patients medically. The doctor should make the patient feel comfortable during the visit. Usually a female nurse will be present during the examination, especially if the doctors is male.

The patient will be more at ease if she knows what to expect before arriving for her appointment. The doctor will likely ask the woman some questions that she might find embarrassing to answer. It is important that she realize that the questions are only be asked so that any potential health risks can be discovered.

When women are being treated for women type health issues, they often prefer having a woman doctor. When training to become a Waco OB GYN, both males and females receive the same education and training. However, whether a male or female is chosen as her doctor is purely a matter of choice.
