If you love fruits do not pass up this one. The few calories in blueberries that there are open the way for guilt free snacking anytime of the day. Eaten as is, or placed in one of your favorite recipes, this fruit adds only seventy calories per cup in their natural form.

Not everyone will enjoy the flavor of this fruit but those people are few. Even if you do not like them fresh, there are any number of ways they can be prepared that will allow you to indulge. Some will like the taste of the wine flavor that is more prominent in wild berries, while other enjoys the sweeter taste of the cultivated berry.

Mankind has had the luxury of eating this fruit for centuries. That has provided a lot of time for man to develop a fruit that is grown all over the world. When cultivated in beds, the berries are large with a sweet taste and palate pleasing juice.

Reference is often made to the blueberry being the miracle fruit. It comes by this name quite honestly being high in nutrients but having no fat, sodium, or cholesterol to speak of. It is naturally high in protein and fiber and is loaded with antioxidants that fight off cancer, stress, bad eyesight, and urinary infections to name but a few. Other fruits and even spinach cannot come close to these bragging rights.

This fruit grows in clumps right on the vine. It must be picked at just the right time because it does not continue to ripen once its taken off the vine. Following the weather patterns throughout North America, it is planted at different times so the fruit is available year round. They can be purchased frozen but why pass up that fresh from the vine flavor?

Recipes that call for blueberries are numerous. From coffee cake, to cookies, to pies, and muffins, there is no recipe calling for fruit where you cannot substitute this berry in its place. Some people enjoy them dried and they can be reconstituted for baking. Bought fresh they will keep in the refrigerator for up to two weeks but it is hard to imagine them lasting that long.

With all the benefits given us with this fruit, there is bound to be one drawback. Once this dark blue berry causes a stain on your skin or clothes, it can be regarded as permanent, although it will wear off the skin over time. When working with this fruit it is advised that hands and clothes both be protected.

The low calories in blueberries make it the perfect diet food. It is a satisfying substitute that makes waiting for the next meal easy to do. Keep plenty on hand for the times that munchies hit. If by chance you purchased more than you can consume, simply place them in a container or bag and pop them in the freezer. No else is required. When a recipe call for blueberries, take out what you need, and keep the rest for the next time.
