What Makes Cheerleading Uniforms Great

By Tonia Michael

Pep squad members consider many factors that can help improve their routine. One of which is their body mass index that gravely enhances their performance. It would be easier for them to perform flips and lifts if their weight is within the ideal range. Aside from this, they can bring home the bacon if their cheerleading uniforms are of perfect fit.

While most spectators perceive that costumes are just for aesthetic measures, cheerleading professionals know that it can be exploited to boost the routine. This philosophy is founded on the principles of physics, particularly in aerodynamics. Using the right cloth and texture for the uniform can add more height to a flip. Also, the fatigue level of a cheerleader is lessened if air can freely pass through the outfit. This way, the oxygen that he released will be easily replenished.

From this thinking, how do we determine the best uniform for cheerleading? It boils down to design and comfort. In terms of design, the costumes must have a binding factor. There can be one dominating color and several accents to the attire. Teams often use bright colours and shiny cloths to catch the audience's attention. Yet, the wardrobe must not remove the focus from the routine itself.

Meanwhile, cheerleading uniforms are often created using lightweight cloths. Silk is often used but a number of teams have used rubber suits as well. Materials like corduroy and velvet can make the dancers iffy about the attire. Thus, it is important to let them dance while wearing the attire to render assessment on necessary adjustments.

Cheerleaders assess what they will wear based on the weight that the material can add to them during a performance. Ideally, they would want something that would make them feel as if they are naked. If this will not be achieved, the dancer will always think of not ripping the outfit apart. Thus, this will limit her mobility and it will merit deductions from the judges. This mind set will ultimately eat up the dancer's confidence.

To avoid this situation, a designer considers the built of the performer. Using a tape measure and basic computations, the designer determines the allowance for the costume of every performer to make it fit perfectly. A costume that is an inch tight or an inch loose will negatively affect the movements of the cheerleader.

As time went by, the trends in outfits have changed. Before, the scene was dominated by tank tops and skirts for females and body-hugging attire for males. With more studies on how a person's suit can boost performance, pep squads started to move from the traditional wardrobe to the scientific one-piece suits that show the physique of the dancer.

Since a lot of competitions are being conducted regularly, creating the perfect attire is highly important. Enable by the willingness to win, any advantage that is permitted the competition rules will be used to the fullest. With the best cheerleading uniforms around, pleasing the crowd becomes second nature. That is the combination that will bring them the title and pride to their families and communities.
